PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Welcome back from Winter Break and Happy New Year. We are grateful to have the return of our students, parents, teachers, and staff. May we all continue to be partners in the school-wide endeavor to have our students be lifelong learners responsible citizens.
Our Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) school-wide plan will commence during third quarter. Based on data collected in the PBS School Wide Information System (SWIS), the area showing a school-wide need for improvement is decreasing student disruptive behavior. Details of the plan are forthcoming to students and parents.
Please review the Personal Safety for Students with your children, reprinted toward the end of this Parent Bulletin. The three rules for safety are especially important as incidents involving young children are increasing. Please remind your children to also be where they belong and to obtain permission from parents before going elsewhere afterschool. Take care.

APPLICATIONS FOR 2003-04 GEOGRAPHIC EXCEPTIONS DUE BY MARCH 1, 2003
Under Hawaii law, all persons of school age are required to attend school in the geographic area in which they reside. By law a student’s residence is determined by the residence of the parents or legal guardians.
Public school students may apply now through March 1, 2003 for Geographic Exceptions (GEs) to attend a school other than their home schools for school year 2003-04.
GE application forms are available at any public school or district office, and must be submitted to either the home school or the school at which attendance is desired. Because of a lack of facility space, certain schools are accepting applications on a waiting list basis only. A chance selection process (lottery) shall be used at schools where applications exceed available spaces. Mililani Uka Elementary will have a chance selection on Friday, April 4 from 3:30 p.m. to create a wait list.
Students currently attending a school on a GE may continue until their terminal year at that school without reapplying each year. Grade 5 is terminal year at Mililani Uka Elementary School.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR SY 2003-04: Students born in 1998
Registration dates are from February 3 to March 1, 2003. Registration hours are from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Students who have not attended a pre-school in Hawaii also need a physical examination within one year before July 26, 2003 and all required immunizations. If your child is attending pre-school in Hawaii, bring your child’s Health Record, Form 14.
HEALTH NOTICE FOR PARENTS OF 4th AND 5th GRADE STUDENTS

Following immunizations:

MIKE MCKENNA "SPIRIT OF GIVING" PROGRAM
We have two families who recently purchased new cars from Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford and designated our school to receive the monetary donation of $100 for each car. The donation was deposited to be used for general school activities and needs. We wish to thank Mr. Arthur Kaai (Nainoa) and
Mr. and Mrs. Buster Sare.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
We have two crossing guards: one at Kuahelani and Hokulewa (w/JPOs), and the other at Lanikuhana and Lanikuhana Place (cul de sac). Therefore, it is very important for parents to review pedestrian safety rules with their children who may be crossing at other intersections.
One particular safety issue for both drivers and students occurs at a corner with a traffic light. On a green light, both students and left-turning cars are allowed to proceed. In this situation it is extremely important that the cars and pedestrians look out for each other and proceed cautiously. There have been some near misses where left-turning cars have almost hit students who are crossing with the green light. Drivers, please keep this in mind when you are driving in a school zone.
Other pedestrian guidelines include:
stay on the sidewalk at all times
cross streets only at crosswalks
look both ways for cars before crossing
stay on the curb until you are sure the cars have fully stopped
look out for right and left turning cars before you step off the curb
SCBM COUNCIL
The SCBM council already met this month. The next meeting will be held on Monday, February 3. Anyone who would like an idea added to the agenda please call Vikki Wong-Webb at 627-7382 at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting.
The agenda for next month will include officially ratifying the school calendar for next year. Minutes are always posted in the office.
HUI NOTES
The Hui board voted to gift to Uka the second phase of air conditioning on the Uka campus. During this winter break, 5 classrooms got air conditioners installed. The board also voted to purchase a new sound system for the cafeteria. Most of our student productions are done there and the old system was the original system.
The Hui sponsored the Keiki Craft Fair. The Sally Foster company donated the wrapping paper. This is the same paper you have a chance to purchase at one of the Hui fund-raisers.
Thank you to Hope Chapel for their generous monthly donation of $100.00.
The next Hui meeting is scheduled for Wed., February 12 at 4:00 p.m. Anyone interested in attending please meet in the school office conference room.
Please think about joining the Hui board next year. This is a good time to drop in at a meeting or two to see if it’s for you. Most of the members of the existing board have volunteered for a number of years and will be stepping down. Board members for next year are in great need.
February 14: Professional Development Day (Teacher Work Day): No school for students
FUTURE FLIGHT
The Future Flight program will be coming to Uka again. A flyer will be sent home later this month but mark you calendars for Feb. 21. Last year the response was so great, people had to unfortunately be turned away. It will be a random drawing if the response is like last year. The families that did attend had a great time and learned many ways to make science fun!
KEIKI CRAFT FAIR
Denice Painter (Kelsey) did a great job at organizing the first ever Keiki Craft Fair at Uka. Everyone involved seemed to feel that it was worthwhile project. Suggestions are being taken for possibly running it again next year. Thank you Denice for bringing a great idea for our Uka students and families.
"LAST CHANCE CRAFT FAIR"
Kamuela Productions held their craft fair on the Uka campus and in the adjacent park. Thank you to all those who came out to support the craft fair. Kamuela Productions will be donating money to the Hui.
HELP THE UKA LIBRARY
Mrs. Enomoto, our Librarian, needs help in the Library NOW. She needs people who can come in once a week for a few hours in the morning or afternoon. The Library volunteer will assist students locate, check in and check out books. Training is provided. Book borrowing privileges are given to volunteers. Please call her now at 627-7303 and ask for the Library.
LIBRARY CLUB
Our library club is still collecting Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Soup labels. Please continue to collect them and send them to school with your child. There is a receptacle in the office and in the Library.
DOMINO’S NIGHT
The next Dough Raising event is Wed., February 11. Uka gets credit for purchases made during the entire day – even lunch from most Domino’s on Oahu. A flyer will come home with the form that needs to be submitted to Domino’s when your order is placed.
STUDENT PLEDGE AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE
The Hawaii State Student Council has a statewide pledge against gun violence. The activity for the pledge will be part of next week's assembly.
The pledge states: "If I see a gun, I won't touch it.
I will remember that any gun I see might be loaded.
I know how important it is to keep myself safe."
A half page note will be sent to each classroom for their students to take home, have it signed and brought back to school by 1/24/03.

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND (NCLB) ACT OF 2001
Details of the Federal Government’s initiative are available on the website, www.whitehouse.gov. The NCLB goals to be reached by the 2013-2014 school year are:
1. All students will reach high standards in reading/language arts and mathematics;
2. All limited English proficient students will become proficient in English;
3. All students will be taught by highly qualified teachers;
4. All students will be educated in learning environments that are safe, drug free, and conducive to
learning.
DOE STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION PLAN (SIP)
Details of Hawaii State’s initiative are available on the website, www.doe.k12.hi.us. The SIP priorities are literacy, civic responsibility and safety & well being. The SIP goals are:
1. Provide a standards-based education for every child;
2. Sustain comprehensive support for all students;
3. Deliver coordinated, systemic support for staff and schools;
4. Develop and implement student, professional, school, and system accountability for the standards.
PERSONAL SAFETY for STUDENTS
Three simple rules will help keep our students safe at school (and home). Teachers will review these rules with students at least once each quarter, and parents should also follow up at home.
- Do not go anywhere alone with someone else without telling your parent or teacher.
This simple rule will prevent many situations from abduction to getting lost. This rule does not require
that children have mature judgment about "good people" and "strangers". In fact, abductors are often
people known to the child, or dressed in a way that impresses the child. By following this rule, adults,
not children, will decide the safety of the situation.
- If someone does something or says something to make you feel bad or weird, tell a trusted adult,
such as your teacher or parent right away.
This rule applies in many situations: when someone is teasing, hurting or taking things from you,
someone is touching your private parts or underwear, someone is giving you a present or food for no
reason, someone is making a strange request such as asking for direction or asking to take a picture.
3. For school only: Whenever you are confused about where you should be Go to the Office!
Examples of when this might happen include if the child comes back to the classroom after being in the
health room and the class is not there or if the child’s afterschool pick up person does not arrive.
