PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA), schools may not release information from a student’s education record
without prior consent. Schools may
release information designated as “directory information” without prior
consent. It has come to the attention
of the Department of Education (DOE) that photographs were not specifically
designated as directory information by the DOE. Now, in order to allow photographs of students to appear in the
school yearbook, the DOE must specifically designate photographs as directory
information. Accordingly, the DOE has
designated photographs as directory information. Therefore, in order for us to
distribute the
SY 2004-05 yearbooks, an attached letter formally notifies
parents that photographs are now designated as directory information.
In addition, parents are being informed of their option to
“opt out” which means parents choose to NOT
have their child’s photographs be included in our school’s yearbook. Should
parents decide to “opt out” and NOT
include their child’s photographs in the school yearbook, parents will need to
obtain a “Non-Disclosure of Directory Information” form from our school office
and submit a completed form to the school office by Thursday, April 28, 2005. Please
refer to attached letter regarding this matter.
Reinventing
Education Act of 2004, also known as “Act 51”, under the “empowerment” effort,
requires the establishment of a School Community Council (SCC) by July 1, 2005
for the 2005-06 school year. Our SCBM Council has completed and approved the
by-laws for our SCC. SCC members are
now being elected by the respective constituent groups: students (2 from
Student Council), parents (4), community (2 nominated & elected by
parents), faculty (5), staff (2), and administrators (1). Act 51 requires that membership of the SCC
include 50% as school staff and 50% as non-school staff. If you are interested in being a member of
the SCC, or are interested in Act 51, please contact PCNC coordinator, Vikki
Wong-Webb, and/or a school administrator.
Our next SCBM Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 2, from
5:00-6:30 p.m. in the library.

READ ALOUD PROGRAM
“RAP”
RAP was an overwhelming success! Reading is on the minds of many Uka students and families. The goal is that our students will want to
read more and in turn will help them achieve more in school.
The last RAP session was attended by 498 of you. Our special guest was Governor Linda Lingle.
She gave an inspirational talk about reading aloud to your children of all
ages. She then read aloud to parents
and she stayed until the end of the program talking and taking photos with all
whom requested.
Thank you to all the families who participated and supported
this family fun and educational program.
