FATHERHOOD FROM A PERSONAL
PERSPECTIVE The Impact of Fathers’ Presence and Parenting Style on Child Development Research on father
involvement and absence determines child emotional and social well-being and academic performance. Fathers’ skills complement those of mothers
and facilitate the development of essential developmental capacities and
prosocial behaviors in their children. Cultural Influences
on Fathering – Special Guest Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua and halau Cultural traditions, values, and
practices has a profound impact on fathering style and
content. The Changing Roles and Responsibilities of Fathers:
Stresses and Successes Beyond being a provider,
today’s fathers are expected to fully participate in every aspect of their
children’s lives while being more conscious of the impact of their own
communication and behavior. How do some fathers excel while others face
challenges in coping with economic pressures and the lack of health or social
support? COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR FATHERS Strategies to Engage and Support Fathers in Schools,
Programs, and Prisons Hawai‘i features innovative
programs which help all fathers as well as which serve particular populations
in the military, early childhood programs, the schools, and the prisons. How to Create Successful Father-Friendly Programs and
Services We
explore the tools and strategies of assessing and designing programs and
services which successfully recruit, engage, and retain fathers in stand-alone
programs or within existing models. STATE SUPPORT FOR
FATHERS The Impact of State Policies and Laws on Fatherhood This overview of how fatherhood
fits into national and state social service, legislative, and funding
priorities examines what’s being done to improve funding, services, policies
and laws which improve father involvement and success. The first of an annual
tradition, these awards recognize a father who demonstrates a commitment to
outstanding parenting skills as well as an exemplary program or service which succeeds
in providing inspirational support to fathers. Fatherhood Conference Schedule at a Glance
Aloha! The Hawai‘i State Commission on Fatherhood, with our
partners Hawai‘i Coalition for Dads and Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii along with
our primary sponsor the Hawai‘i Children’s Trust Fund, are pleased to invite
you to the 1st Annual Statewide Hawai‘i Fatherhood Conference, “Inspiring Fathers.”
We hope you will enjoy this opportunity to learn about
the importance of father involvement in children’s lives and how the provider
community can effectively encourage father involvement through programs,
services, policies, and laws. The Hawai‘i State Commission Fatherhood has, since late
2004, been working to develop best practices information on fatherhood
services, identify effective fatherhood services in Hawai‘i, and recognize
those who make a concerted effort to facilitate father involvement. We look forward to sharing our progress and plans with
you, and to hearing your views of Hawai‘i can be more responsive to the needs
and concerns of fathers. Our plenary sessions feature dynamic, engaging speakers,
and we hope you will be able to immediately apply what you learn at this event
in your own work with fathers and their families. Who
Should Attend? Professionals and concerned citizens, who work with and
care for children & families, including: educators, social workers, social
worker assistants and aides, child care providers, early childhood educators,
psychologists, legislators, attorneys, guardians ad litem, health care
professionals, program administrators, counselors, law enforcement and court
personnel, mental health professionals, prevention workers, substance abuse
counselors, workforce development personnel, parents and foster parents,

“INSPIRING FATHERS” CONFERENCE REGISTRATION
Registration includes conference materials, certificate of completion,
continental breakfast and lunch. Payment may be made by
check and purchase order to State of Hawaii Department of Human Services.
Purchase orders will be accepted and should
accompany the registration form. If not available at time of remittance, a
purchase order number, authorized signature, and billing address are requested.
Cancellations
for refund must be received in writing by March 30. Transfers of registration may
be done, in writing, until March 30.

Certificate
of Completion: All participants will be awarded a certificate of completion, which
