Get Moving, Get Fit
Mililani Uka
Elementary School kicked
off their fitness and health curriculum with the “Get Moving, Get Fit” physical
fitness event on August 29,
2005. Over seventy
volunteers from the parent, community, and Schofield Army Wolfhounds combined
efforts to make the experience a huge success.
Eighteen fitness
stations were set up at the Kuahelani
Neighborhood Park
so that each class room could participate in three different and fun
activities. Stations ranged from basic
hula, jumping rope, sponge races, water brigade, sack and three legged races,
obstacle courses and dancing to name just a few. At each station the students discussed the
importance of exercise and nutrition to good health. Meadow Gold’s Lani Moo joined the students in
some of the activities while Hope
Central Church
assisted by funding cool delicious oranges as the students departed the field,
and HMSA provided washable “GO” tattoos to remind the students that fitness
should be a daily activity.
In addition to
the station volunteers, parent assisted with refreshments for the volunteers so
that they could join the students at lunch where the Army Wolfhounds were the
preferred guests at each table.
Afterwards, students participated in writing and drawing a picture about
their favorite activity. The goal of the
event was to help make students aware that fitness isn’t limited to sports
clubs and that many of the tools for having a fun, fitness time are right in
their own home. Everyone at our school
and especially our PCNC, Norma Tansey
who organized this event, wishes to express our thanks to each person and
organization who helped to make this event one that Uka’s student body will
long remember.
The smiles on the
children’s faces were proof that our physical fitness day was a success!
