Monday, February 4, 2008, 5:00 PM

 

Members Present:

Gail Urabe, Lynn Mills, Ann Saruwatari, Robyn Goya, Jill Muranaka, Heather Wilhelm, Kawai Tao, Alex Noveloso, Kylie Yamamoto, Cynthia Nichols, Eric Matsumoto, Eileen Nims, Jackson Ma

 

I.                     Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order by Chair Eric Matsumoto at 5:00 p.m.

 

II.                   Introduction of Members/Guests:

      Norma Tansey

 

III.                  Chair’s Remarks:

      Eric thanked everyone for their attendance.

 

IV.               Approval of Minutes:

Minutes unanimously approved as circulated..

 

V.                 Approval of Agenda:

Agenda unanimously approved as circulated.

 

VI.               Reports

A.                 Hui Update:  Eileen Nims

·        Honolulu Academy of Arts program started in all 3rd grade classes

·        Mad Science Program scheduled for all K, 1st and 2nd grade classes

·        2nd General Fundraiser Meeting scheduled for this Friday to prep for 08/09 school wide and grade level fundraisers

·        Nomination committee formed for 08/09 HUI officers

·        Dan Crow performing at two school day events And one evening event on Feb 12th; funded by HUI and Student Council

·        Shamrock fundraiser ended today; raised $14,000.

·        Discussing campus clean-up and recycling activities for Earth Day

 

B.                 PCNC:  Norma Tansey

Report circulated.  Highlight:  Feb 9th, Wellness Fair @ Mililani Town Center

 

C.                Student Council:  KylieYamamoto/Alex Noveloso

·        January Hi 5 recycle collection netted $264.62.

·        Hawaii Air Guard’s collection for the Philippines took place the same day.  UKA parent Dana Ayala will visit and return with pictures.

·        SC officers will visit Olaloa Senior Center for the Complex Senior Dance on Feb 8th.

·        NFL Pro Bowl invited 5th graders to Ohana Day @ Aloha Stadium on Feb 9th.  ~ 60 students plan to attend.

·        Six SC members will be assisting with the ring toss game featuring the Character Cunts pillars @ Mililani Complex Wellness Fair on Feb 9th.

 

D.                Non-Certificated Staff:

E.                 Teachers:  K-1

      No report

 

      Teachers:  2-3 

 

Grade 2: 

Academy of Arts Museum in a Box lesson scheduled for Feb 22nd with follow-up lesson on Feb 29th.  Field trip to Academy of Arts set for  Feb 28th.   

Fine Arts standards:

Investigate how art is used in celebrations, festivals, and customs of selected cultures from the past and present.

Describe different respo9nses to the same work of art.

 

Grade 3:

Artist in the school with Rush Lee began on Jan 28th, the first of five lessons of 1-1/2 hour classes, involving science integrated art lessons.

Physical Science:  Compare how simple machines do work to make life easier.

Fine Arts:  Use the elements of art and design.

  

      Teachers:  4-5

H.                 Management:

1.  Alternative External Funding:  Admin, staff and Hui to determine all the funding resources that may be useful to Uka.  These will be culled for practicability (cost-benefit analysis for the application and subsequent reporting if awarded) to determine which would be pursued, to include

      None.

 

VIII.            New  Business

A.                 Ratification of Financial Plan

Moved and seconded to ratify approval of the Financial Plan signed and submitted in December 2007 with the Academic Plan.  Motion carried.

 

B.        Nominations for SCC Elections

           All agreed to have nominations completed in March and ballots out in April for Parent and Community segments, and on-campus segments to follow current processes.

 

IX.               Discussion Items

A.        External funding process.  Council will discuss ways of obtaining external funding for supplemental programs, based on recommendations from an Ad Hoc Committee of Council members to include but not limited to:  Hui/Parent rep, Community rep and Administration rep.
